Kittery Eye Answers Your Eye Care Questions

Kittery Eye - FAQ

Q. Do your patients appreciate the upgraded digital ophthalmic lens designs?

A. Absolutely! Who doesn’t love seeing better? In today’s fast-paced world many customers don’t want to spend a lot of time “figuring out” their glasses. Increased satisfaction means people are out enjoying their world without worrying about their glasses.

Q. Who is a good candidate to wear digital ophthalmic lenses? Why? Are there particular patients who these lenses are especially useful for, and why?

A. All patients benefit from the improvements in technology of free form designs. They all will experience crisper vision with better contrast. The real benefits are the ability to add custom measurements taking into account how the lenses will be worn. Digital lenses factor in how far the lenses are worn from your eye, the tilt of the frame, and how curved to your face the frame is. All of this is calculated into surfacing your lens specifically for you, in the frame you choose. This process takes an already good lens and adds the “wow” effect. These lenses are very helpful for patients who in the past were unable to wear standard progressive designs or have higher prescriptions, because of the optimized vision in areas that were previously unusable due to aberration.

Q. How do Digital Ophthalmic lenses differ from standard lenses?

A. Digital lenses are made of the same materials as conventional lenses. What makes digital lenses different is the process by which they are made. To create these lenses, an advanced technology is used to resurface the lens allowing for greater precision over the entire surface. This enables your prescription to be the same strength at the very outer edges of your lens as it is in the middle.

Q. What are digital ophthalmic lenses?

A. In today's high tech world, many of you have heard the term ‘high-definition’. Free-Form and Digital lenses are to eyeglasses what HDTVs are to home entertainment.

Digital ophthalmic lens patterns are customized to the individual’s prescription, factoring how the lens is worn physically and what it is used for. Digital technology allows both the front and back surfaces of the lenses to work in tandem to result in optically clear lenses that are customized for wearers. They allow for sharper, clearer, crisper vision throughout the whole lens. Not all digital lenses are created equal, which is why one of our opticians will be able to guide you to the best choice for your lifestyle and optical needs.

Q. What do you find most exciting about digital ophthalmic lens technology?

A. It used to be we had to train patients how to use their lenses and limit their expectations on visual quality. The newest HD designs allow more natural use of the eye within the lens, feeling like the natural accommodation our younger eyes had. Combine a free form lens with glare free lenses and we create a visual experience unlike anything we were able to offer 10 years ago.
